First things first, note that as of February 27, 2023, individuals must be at least 18 years old to legally marry in England or enter a civil partnership. Ensuring compliance with this requirement sets the foundation for a valid union from the start.

Before the big day arrives, there are some necessary steps to take. Giving a minimum 28 days' notice of your intention to marry or partner up is mandatory. Visit your local register office, residing there for at least seven days, to kickstart the process. Remember, if each of you resides in different districts, notices must be given separately.

International love? No problem! If one partner hails from outside the UK, both must give notice jointly. Following notice, tie the knot within 12 months to seal the deal. And if you're opting for a Church of England or Church of Wales ceremony, Banns, which are a notice of proposed marriage could replace the notice requirement.

Already attached? Hold off on any further nuptials until prior relationships are legally dissolved. Additionally, close relatives cannot wed or enter into partnerships as per legal restrictions.

When it comes to the venue, ensure your chosen location aligns with legal guidelines. Register offices, religious buildings, approved premises, and even unexpected settings like homes, prisons, or hospitals can be suitable venues.

Every marriage or civil partnership creates a legal contract between partners. Vows exchanged, signatures penned, witnesses present – these essentials solidify your union and grant rights recognised by law.

And let’s not forget the small print: property, assets, and investments often get entwined in matrimonial bliss. Consider prenuptial or post-nuptial agreements to safeguard each party's interests and assets.

Names matter too! Wives need not adopt their husband's surname, and creative hyphenations are becoming more commonplace. Be sure to notify relevant organisations of any name changes – from banks to passports.

Lastly, drafting or revising wills post-union ensures your estate is handled according to your wishes after you're gone. Remember, proper planning is key to a successful and legally sound ceremony.

By mastering these essential legal checklists, you pave the way for a harmonious and legally secure journey into married life or partnership. Embrace the legal side of love with confidence, knowing that you've covered all bases for a happily ever after.
