What are your areas of specialism?
I specialise in Private Client, with a focus presently on Administration of Estates work.
What type of work do you do on a day-to-day basis?
On a day-to-day basis, I meet with Executors and beneficiaries to discuss the deceased’s estate, explain the probate process, and clarify and answer legal questions. I advise clients on their rights, responsibilities, and obligations during the probate process, including advice on Inheritance Tax and the distribution of assets.
I prepare and submit applications for grants of probate or letters of administration to the probate registry. I work with clients to identify, gather, and value assets in an estate. This involves liaising with banks and financial institutions. I arrange settlement of outstanding debts and liabilities and calculate any inheritance due.
Once all the above is done, I prepare detailed estate accounts and arrange payment of inheritance to beneficiaries of the estate to finalise.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Ironically, I enjoy the client facing part the most! Being able to support a bereaved person through a very difficult time is hugely gratifying. I am also known to enjoy drafting IHT 400 and associated schedules.
What inspired you to pursue a career in law, and how has that passion evolved over time?
My inspiration to pursue a career in law originated from a profound inability to suffer injustice quietly. When I was in secondary school, I was given the opportunity to undertake work experience at a local law firm and found that this ignited a passion for understanding the justice system in our country.
I have always been a person who advocates for fairness and conflict resolution, and so there was a natural inclination to enter the legal profession. I have been very lucky that the practical experience I have had over the past 15 years has involved working with some incredibly talented legal professionals. This has provided a consistent source of inspiration to me to continue to strive to make meaningful contributions to the legal profession.
Surprising Facts?
Now this is hard! There is really nothing surprising about me. I guess as close as I can get is to say that I am half Iraqi and half Welsh, and I live in England.
