Despite this deep emotional connection, it's crucial to understand that legally, pets are considered property and cannot inherit money directly under a Will. So, how can you ensure that your furry or feathered companions are looked after once you're no longer around?
Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when making arrangements for your pets:
1. Choosing a Guardian:
Decide who you would like to entrust the care of your pet to. Whether it's a family member, friend, or a nominated charity, make sure to discuss this responsibility with the chosen individual before finalising your decision. It's wise to have a backup plan in case your primary choice is unable to take on the responsibility.
You can also grant discretion to your Executors by providing them with a letter of wishes outlining your preferences for your pet's future home.
2. Providing Financial Support:
Owning a pet comes with financial responsibilities. While money cannot be left directly to your pet, you can leave a specific sum to the person taking care of your pet, with the intention that it be used for your pet's well-being. Alternatively, setting up a discretionary trust can ensure ongoing financial support for your pet, with added oversight on how the funds are utilised.
3. Planning for Future Pets:
If you're likely to welcome new pets into your life or replace current ones, it's essential to update your Will accordingly to include all pets that may be part of your household at the time of your passing.
Ensuring the well-being of your pets after you're gone requires thoughtful planning and consideration.
